Default Hyundai timing belt

Hey guys I just got back from the local Santa Fe dealer and he told me
my 2002 Santa Fe's timing belt needs servicing. He said it need to be
serviced at 60,000 miles. I don't know if he is full of BS, and trying
to make a sale, or if he is telling the truth. If anyone anything
about this and can shed some light on it I would appreciate it. Thanks

Cars need maintenance.

At 60,000 miles, you should be on your second transmission fluid and
differential fluid change, probably the second brake fluid change,
etc.

If you don't do maintenance, cars fall apart. If it says to change the
belt in the service schedule in the manual (which it will), you need to
do it. And you need to do EVERYTHING else that the manual lists.

If you have a question about the maintenance schedule for your vehicle
you can find a convenient copy in the owners manual. The maintenance
schedule will tell you what maintenance is to be performed and at what
mileage to perform said maintenance.

If you fed your owners manual to a pack of hungry wolverines you can
go to Hyundai's web site and look at the online copy.

Most engine makers recommend replacing the timing belt every 60,000 miles on an interference engine. This is usually a good precaution because if the belt breaks it will bend all of the valves. 60,000 miles is somewhat arbitrary and depends on the engine design and the kind of driving. I have seen belts break in as little as 40,000 miles, and others last over 130,000 miles.
