A Solution of How to Remove Rusted Caliper Bolt
Hello,
I had a real hard time removing the caliper bolt from my 1993 Geo Prizm (rebadged Toyota Corolla.) It was rusted on tight. I thought sharing my experience may help others with a similar problem. I tried the following before the bolt was removed: Split/cracked two chrome 6 point sockets. One was a no name brand and the other was a Snap On (that hurt.) Various lubricants (i.e. penetrating oil, WD-40, Valvoline Synthetic Lubricant and PB Blaster.) This was over the course of 6 months and nothing worked until the following... What finally did it was a couple of treatments of Seafoam (the spray can version) in the course of a week, an impact socket on a breaker bar, and a couple of gentle whacks on the head of the bolt with a hammer (you don't want to deform the head of the bolt to the point where the socket won't fit on it anymore.) It still took one herculean effort to get it to turn. However, once it began to turn I was home free. The threads on the bolt were so bad that the bolt couldn't be used again... Chris |
