What Oil is in my car?
Any ideas what Oil is in my new (2004) 156 Sportwagon 2.4JTD (175BHP)?
I need to top it up - my local FIAT (not alfa) dealer says ALL JTD engines need Selenia WR 5W40, but the manual says to use Selenia Turbo Diesel 10W40 (except for "decidely sporty use" - in which case use the WR 5W40). As I just need to top up, I need to use the same as what's already in there - but cannot find out from anybody what this is! Any help gratefully received - the Oil level indicator has just dropped another notch....... Martin. |

Go to your local factor and buy a can of 10w 40 engine oil that meets the spec. Semi synth will do. Pay no more than £14 for 5l retail. Don't bother with brand names. Remember; any oil is better than no oil. You can mix any modern engine oils with no problems. -- ColonelTupperware spouting ******** on Usenet since 1997 Usenet FAQ at http://www.its.caltech.edu/its/servi...ws/news2.shtml UPCE FAQ at http://upce.org.uk/ UKRM FAQ at http://www.ukrm.net/faq/ |

Best thing to do is top up with the same oil as is in the engine.
Ex factory Alfa's have full synthetic "Selenia turbo diesel" (10W40) This is an oil for tambient temperatures between minus 15ºC and plus 40ºC The full synthetic "Selenia WR diesel" (5W40) is more a "winter oil" than a high performance oil; for ambient range minus 35ºC and plus 30ºC. If you cant get Selenia to top up, you may use more or less any other full synthetic oil, but try to avoid semi synthetic or non synthetic oils. I have read the other mailings, and in deed any oil is better than no oil, but don't calculate your oil costs on basis of liter price; try calculating by the km's you drive and see how little more per km you are paying when you use "expensive" oil compared to cheap oil. When changing the oil at the maintenance intervals, you may go for a semi-synthetic oil (I wouldn't !!) but NEVER use non-synthetic oils. Down grading from synthetic to semi-synthetic or even non-synthetic will most likely result in higher oil comsumption! The price per liter advantage will be gone when you start consuming oil at a higher rate! And the lubricating properties of full synthetic are superior!! (better cooling / less friction = higher power!!)
