1830 cc boxers
I have a spare 1700 carburator boxer engine, that the previous owners took
the carbs of and then left outside, water has gotten in 1 cilinder and it is not useable anymore without honing/boring and then new pistons. I only bought this engine for the heads and it was cheap, but now I'm thinking, there used to be conversions that bore the block to 90 mm with special 90 mm pistons, and then you have a 1832 cc engine. Supplier of pistons were Autodelta UK and I believe JE pistons were used by some German tuner. Has anyone experience with these? How is durability/driveability? Aren't the cilinder walls getting to thin? Does anyone know a source for 90 mm pistons? Having pistons custom made is beyond what I want to spent. |

Having pistons custom made is beyond what I want to spent. << Hi Bert No direct experience I'm afraid (I've always felt that 1712cc was just about on the limit for the boxer - which was after all designed as a 1186, if memory serves) but when my brother and I were racing in the UK Alfa championships some years ago we were always blown away by Nick Sismey in some fairly wild Suds and 33s. His cars were prepared by Lahoma Engineering (which I believe was / is run by his father John). You could do worse than try them. Last time I heard they were running a 2000cc 33 (Gulp!) There's some crazy 33s in the Netherlands. Also very expensive, due to the specially made crankshaft. I want to keep it much more simple then all that, no turbo, otherwise I could prepare a 16v with suspension and all (it is for a Sud) and adapt carbs or aftermarket EFI but it is all too much bother. I want a daily driver, not a daily hobby! I searched the web for 1.8 boxers and that didn't turn up much, if it was a simple and moneywise operation I would think it would have been more popular. |
