Default Oil Pressure Gauge

Pardon my Question, But I haven't had a car with an actual OP gauge for many
years. I've noticed when
driving my '06 MX-5, that when I'm idling at a light, (warmed up) the OP
gauge has a tendency to drop to 2 or 3 lines above the low indicator (fat
line on left). As soon as I rev the engine or take off from the light, all
appears fine. At 35 mph / 2000 rpm, in 4th gear, the gauge indicates
"straight up" and actually goes more to the right as I get to higher rpms.
The temp gauge is solid in the middle, and the car seems to be running just
fine. Is it normal for an OP gauge to move around that much?

In a word. YES. You see, if you just want to see if the engine is
running, then a simple light will do. If you want to see if the oil pump
is putting out the proper amount of pressure for the RPM's the engine is
turning, then you get an "oil pressure gage" and let it show you how it
is changing. One of the reasons that Mazda went to a "non-reading" gage
in the mid and late ninty cars is what you just asked about. Many people
have never owned a car with a real oil pressure gage in it and they
didn't know what to think when this "thing" kept moving on the gage. :-)

Thanks, Bruce...

I think that's what he's saying, yes. It's certainly what my OP gauge does
and, from what others have said here in the past, it's what theirs does too.

Yes, that's how my '91 worked. (that's how it should work.)
