Default E28 auto transmission problem... 528e

Hi,
My brother's '86 528e has developed a sudden loss of all forward movement
through the automatic transmission. Reverse works as it should. The tranny is
the simple one without the 3 position dial my '88 535i auto has.
His car has only 124,000 on it and I am surprised it has gone out since my own
cars have respectively 170,000 and 230,000 with no transmission problems.
Fluid has been checked and is not burned. Is there an electrical sensor or
switch or part which has possibly failed or is this strictly a job for a shop?
Any suggestions appreciated!
Write me direct if so moved but check my e-mail address for the obvious.
Many thanks,
Lance
