I had the same gas gauge problem with my ’95 Neon, over 125,000 miles.
I pulled the humongous sending unit out of the gas tank, found the
actual electronic/resistive part of the unit that the contacts slide
back and forth on as the float moves, and I found the contacts to be
contaminated with some sort of thin carbon buildup. I cleaned the
contact surfaces GENTLY with some 400 grit sandpaper, then blasted the
whole electronic part with contact cleaner/lube from Radio Shack.
Tested and reassembled it, and Presto! Gas gauge works now, and I
didn’t have to pay the $115 for the new sending unit. Give that a try,
and NO SMOKING!!
