The gas cap is leaking. OR, it was replaced with a type of gas cap that
has a breather vent in it. Beetles DO NOT WANT a vented gas cap, they
have a venting hose system that takes care of it.

If you had a gas cap with ventilation (or just LEAK), it would allow
gasoline to leak out in hard turns, as the gas sloshes around in the
tank and filler neck.
