I took a driver's ed program in high school (I'm a US guy). Granted, this was
15 years ago, but it wasn't really part of the regular school curriculum. The
class consisted of maybe 20-30 people if I remember right and was done outside
of normal school hours as more of an extra-curricular activity of sorts, but
indeed it was done in the school.
With everyone together it was all class-room work only. I think they had two
or three cars that you could sign up for behind-the-wheel instruction (my only
experience with a Geo Metro). Again, that was something you'd do on weekends
or evenings and not between Math 101 and lunch :-P
