Hi Dave,
The quick way to find out is to follow Mike's suggestion, pull
number one plug, seal hole with finger, and feel for compression stroke,
and stop cranking with balancer at top dead center, pull cap and rotor
should be pointed at number one mark on cap, or it's ignition wire.
In replacing the distributor, you did reattach the wire leading
from the coil.
