Your concern is understandable, but if the car(s) are far enough from
the intersection, then there should be no reason for concern. Just make
sure you turn into the right most lane.

Lack of signal use is a pet peeve of mine as well, and most people don't
bother using them around here. I'm suprised that's not the case in NY
or CT. FWIW, I always signal when making lane changes or turns.
