Stock is definitely 28 spline for 96-04. I believe there is a
difference in length between the 96-98's and 99-04's but I don't have
the specific measurements handy for the stock pieces. Here's a link
to Moser's application page, they list the measurements as 29 31/32
for the 96-98 and 30 11/16 for the 99-04 for their replacement units.
I'd bet Moser's numbers are accurate.

No matter how you slice it the 31-spline stuff that Summit sent you
isn't going to get you down the road.
