Hi Jim,
this seems to be a common problem - caused by deteriorating welding lines on
the board. If you are a good mechanic, you can fix it yourself. If not, it's
going to be expensive. You have to demount the dashboard and the odometer
and exchange two resistors. . There is a detailed fixing advice to it, but
it is in German:
