thanks for replying

I've also got a passat so took the switch from the driver door in the
passat and tried it in the golf but have the same problem. Tried the
switch from the golf in the passat and it works ok.
Got hold of a manual today and according to that all the windows and
electric mirrors are on one fuse F14, so because the mirrors work ok
and one of the windows works I reckon it's not a fuse problem.
Do you know what else there is along the wire from door switch to
motor? There's a mention of a Thermo fuse for windows but can't find
that anywhere and presume if it was blown then all windows would stop
working?
Also the problem of the passenger door switch on the driver door. It
will only close the passenger window but not open it? Wiring?
I've had the panels off today but can't see any problem with the
wiring. The motor thing inside the driver door is definately trying to
do something, you can feel it. Presumably the driver window switch
works then cos it's activating the motor?
Does it look like the motors/regulators are knackered? What would I
need to buy to fix the problem?

thanks a lot
