Best tires?

Our 2008 Mountaineer Premier needs new tires. The current 235/65R18
Michelins (not the LTX series) are remarkably worn at just under 30K miles.
Because of the amazing results I have had with the...

AWD operation question

I've driven a '97 Explorer with Control Trak for years. It works well and I

2010 Explorers

It is sort of like music, sure you can just put on a CD and have sound, but
the joy of making music by playing an instrument is a thing unto itself.
Likewise with cooking, you can buy a frozen...

Alas, the shift to automatic transmissions in the US is symptomatic of the
decline of western civilization...just let somebody else think about the
driving, I'm along for the ride <sigh>

Radio interference capacitor - 2001 Explorer

Are you sure it is the ignition? Try turning the key on without starting and
see if you get a second or two of the noise. If so, it is the fuel pump,
which Ford's were notorius for. In fact, there...

Steering Rack 97 Explorer

Thanks, Peter. Nope, used only PS fluid. Even replaced it with fresh with a
boost in seal sweller additive and that stopped it for a while. Since then,
top it off with one of the available PS...

Steering Rack 97 Explorer

My trusty Explorer with 260K+ miles has developed a slow power steering
fluid leak at the steering rack. Since that part is over $300, and the leak
is real slow, we tried using some stop leak,...

Car storage and mice

Living on a farm, we get mice in almost every vehicle, even one parked in
the garage this year. Particularly bad is in our old '74 GMC horse van that
sits idle for weeks at a time in the winter....

97 Explorer SOHC Hard Start

The IAC valve is a common repair item on Explorers with your mileage. I just
checked Autozone and they are $104 there. As I recall, though, it is an
electrically operated valve, so I am not sure...

Explorer Sport - boots deteriorated on ball joints

Nothing to disassemble on the Taurus we did, just remove the old boot and
clamps. It went pretty easily and the replacement split boots lasted for
years afterwards.

Explorer Sport - boots deteriorated on ball joints

I needed to replace the CV joint boots on an older Ford Taurus and found
split boots for sale through JC Whitney. They come with grease, clamps, and
glue and you assemble them around the joint...

97 Explorer electrical problem - Help!

I have a 1997 XLT 4dr, 4WD Explorer with 5-spd manual. It has been
essentially trouble-free for almost 250K miles and we've routinely used it
to haul a utility trailer. It came with trailer-prep,...

Brake puzzle

Reading this string, I think Ford dropped the manual transmission in the
Explorer because it was just too good a vehicle and they just couldn't get
owners to come back! My '97 has almost 250K miles...

97 ford explorer dome lights ?

As I recall, all those functions are performed by the GEM computer. Perhaps
you can get a reset by disconnecting the battery for 10 minutes and
reconnecting? Good luck.

Clutch life prediction?

Mine, bought new in the Fall of '96, was having trouble shifting at 160K,
due apparantly to a slave cylinder problem. So I replaced the clutch and

98' Mazda B4000 RWD 5spd HARD to shift into 1st from stop

clutch housing. It was failing to allow the clutch to completely release.

98 B4000 Heater Control Blows HOT on COLD position

I am not sure, but suspect the Mazda used the same heater/AC system as
Explorers of that time? If so, you are describing classic heater blend door
problems. The shaft to the blend door was fragile...

Explorer update in 1995- good?

That was a good series for the Explorer and extremely reliable. Biggest
changes from the gen-1 Explorers besides the grille are the IFS and
Control-Trak 4WD.

IMHO, the '97 is the choice year....
