My 91 is smoking out the vents

Absolutely right. The blower motor resistor pack, inside the air manifold
under the hood. There will be a 3 or 4 pin connector going to the pack and
it pulls out of the manifold.

The 1993 model year was the last Explorer year to have R-12.

The 1994 should have R-134A.

It can be anything intermittent. I had a similar problem with my 1993 and
found it to be a bad fuel pump relay or maybe the contact in the relay box
was
intermittent. Anyway, replacing the relay...
