81 Scirocco suddenly overheats - followup
The problem was the thermostat. It looked to be in excellent shape, but did
not open at all, even at 212°F. Odd that it would so suddenly go completely
blooie.

Temp gauge goes to top, red light flashes, but radiator doesn't steam and
fan doesn't come on. Oil temp rises slowly. Takes about 5 miles of urban
driving from cold start.
Started cold and allowed...

Car passed smog test today with very low numbers. To do it, though, mixture
had to be set so lean the engine would barely idle at all, even with idle
air screwed waaay out.

I found some silicone plugs at the local car parts store. With all hoses to
external devices plugged (including the aux air reg), there is a slight drop

OK, I bypassed the A/C hose completely (vacuum reservoir is in the front of
the right wheel well, BTW). The center diagram you posted is not quite
right. See additional photos - including the diagram...
