Help! Dealer screwing me

Hi folks I am hoping someone can help me out. My timing belt snapped last
week the cylinder head is totalled and the dealer is holding me to ransom.
Could someone tell me when the official recommended checks on the timing
belt are supposed to be carried out? i.e at what service my car has done
61000 miles but Alfa recommend changing it at 72000.
thanks for any help.

From reading this group I have learned that current recommendation is to
check and/or change belt at 36000 miles.
Have owned my 146 from new in 1999.All literature received with car states
belt change at 72000 and I have never received any notification from Alfa or
selling dealer that this has been changed to 36000.
My local Alfa specialist advised belt change at 5 years old or between 50
and 60k.Had it changed earlier this year---old belt did not look worn but I
have not pushed car too hard.
Hope this helps a bit

My dealer (AMC Chelmsford) told me, when I questioned about the belt on my
147.
"If you have had the belt inspected by us at 36K miles and it subsequently
fails before 72K we will repair at our
expense apart from the cost of the belt and tensioner, which would be
chargeable as a service item"

this was in response to my query as to the validity of a visual check.

No unfortunately the only service I had done on the car that was not
carried out by the dealer was the 36000 miles and they are not accepting
that a belt check was carried out!!!! So they are trying to wriggle out of
paying to fix the cylinder head. Plus they are saying all 16 valves are
bent is this possible?
Thanks for your reply it is much appreciated.

Is 36000mls a major service?
