New video disappointment

Just went out a bought a Pny Geforce 6800GT to replace my trusty 9700pro and
I must say it is quite a letdown. Either the 9700P was wayyy ahead of its
time or Nvidia hasnt got their **** together yet.

The ONLY reason I went Nvidia is because of Linux support.

Thanks for the info - I was thinking about a X800Pro vs 6800GT. Guess
it's an X800Pro then (when the prices drop).

You sure it's not something else in your system holding it back ?
Personally, I went for the X800 Pro, but the 6800GT is ,supposedly, very
quick.

Yea Ted I had all intentions of going the X800Pro route but for a couple
minor reasons. First was Linux compatibility and I do like the idea of the
shader 3.0 support and the benchmarks between the two come in very close.

Im gonna do a fresh OS install later today to verify.

doesn't ATI provide drivers for Linux, too?

Cheers, uwe

Yep, but those who have tried them will tell you to avoid ATI if you use
Linux.

Not for Xorg 6.8 just 6.7. Soon though from what I hear. I may take this
Nvidia back for an X800 if that happens soon.

There's nothing wrong with the 6800GT. It's *twice* the speed of my old
9700pro. No, nvidia can't do fsaa/aa to save their lives, but so what, I'd
rather run 1600x1200 anyway.

At $350 5months ago it is and was the best perf/perf high-end card on the
market. ATI completely botched the release of the X800XT in all
departments, from performance to price to availability. It is only just now
that ATI is releasing a card, the X800XL, that matches the 6800GT, AND IT IS
PCI-E ONLY AND IS NOT YET AVAILABLE.

The upshot is that MitchA is just as screwed up in his videocard opinions
as he is in supporting the Asshole-In-Chief.

Yeah, but they haven't released anything for Xorg, so no accelerated 3D
for the ATI owners running the latest distros...
