Oil service

Just picked up a used 2002 325ci that is still
covered by the Full Maintenance. Must the
service indicator pass the mileage reading to
qualify for an oil change? They recommend
you don't run it past that mileage so how close
will they honor the free maintenance.(I'll give
them a call tomorrow but thought I might
find out tonight.) First BMW, what a trip!!!!
Just tucked it away for the night.......
Thanks,
Joe

Generally an oil change is indicated when you don't get any more green bars.
There is also a maximum time between changes for very low mileage drivers.

Considering the nice car you have, I would just get the oil changed even if
they don't pay for it. Always a good idea to be on the cautious side. Then
you can follow the indicated service intervals.

I was pretty sure in his car that he has a mileage count down and not the
green yellow red bars. I have a '99 323i and have mileage count down...

Yes, I have the mileage countdown type.

Hmmm.... I had an 87 325 and it had the service indicator lights. Pretty
sure they all do since at least back then, certainly on a 2002.

I stand corrected.

These cars don't have green/yellow/red bars!

Read the manual? I was told by BMW in the UK that "there is a 250
mile window" around the mileage countdown. Trouble is mine said 750
miles to go but in only 100 it's already -150. Apparently the mileage
will start flashing if the service is way overdue. Also the manual
says to change the oil annually if you do less than about 6000 miles a
year.

service interval indicator (amber as opposed to green bar) or 1 year from
new/last service ... whichever comes first. I'd recommend at least one
change in between. While 16K miles service is getting to be the norm,
there's a lot of anecdotal evidence (that's inconvenient evidence if its
contrary to your beliefs) that extended service builds up sludge in
undesirable places. Read C&D's latest editorials ... extended oil service
is on their radar as well.

A filter change in between oil changes should be more than adequate if
you worry about it, and is very easy---it's on top and you don't even
get dirty. You have over 7 quarts of highest-grade synthetic (not just
K-Mart synthetic), and it will indeed last a year or whatever the
computer bars say. Listen to the engineers that designed the car.
