Winter driving tips

My local newspaper just ran a story on winter driving, including these
tips, which I've seen in many other newspapers and magazines:

....Drive slower than usual.

....Plan more time for your trip.

....Dress appropriately for the cold.

....Slow down for turns.

....Watch for children playing in the snow.

Ya gotta wonder just who these articles are written for - apparently
for folks who are WAY too young to be driving, or maybe people from
another planet, where they just invented the automobile.

We had a tiny dusting of snow here in the Twin Cities yesterday.
The result was 3 major accidents that closed Interstate highways
for hours at a time. I-35W was shut down at Pilot Knob Road
most of the evening with wrecked cars all over. I-94 was shut
down in two different places, one due to a car that crossed
the median and hit another head on, with fatal results. I
think just about everyone could stand to review these tips
once a year.

They are written for your average American- the one behind the wheel of a
pickup truck or SUV who thinks they are a "above average driver" and that
they can plow right through that snow and ice going full speed because they
have a 4x4. Some people really are this stupid.

Even the good drivers never slow down enough and for sure don't
increase their following distance.

Either they do slow down "enough" and leave "adequate" following
distance, or they're not good drivers.
