Is this possible

Hi Everyone,

I wanted to buy a windmill aerator for my pond but they start at
$800.00 which is insane. I was thinking about bolting some blades onto
a smog (air) pump off a car and attaching air tubing to the output and
running this into the pond. I would then mount the pump with blades on
a tower. Does anyone know if this would work? Does a smog (air) pump
put out enough air to run to really do anything?

Thanks,

Sam

It will work if you have a good steady 50~80 mph wind ...

If you put a really BIG pulley on the fan & connect it by belt to a
really SMALL pulley on the pump, it may produce enough air to do mabee
a small aquarium. Spend the money, buy the right unit for the job.

You need to find out how many CFM the 'real' aerator puts out to service
how many cubic feet of pond you have first or you will fast have dead
fish.

Then figure the air pump from a vehicle 'starts' putting out at say 1000
rpm and works best at 3000 rpm. I am sure the CFM ratings are out there
for those pumps too.

That would need one serious wind or gearing to turn blades that fast eh.

I would be finding out the brand of pump the real thing uses and the
size and gearing of the fan blades to run it then just make my own.
Normally one can cut the costs more than by half doing it themselves
with the proper parts.
