Forcing an *up*shift in an automatic--mpgs by
Proctologically Violated©®
Awl--
Most auto trannies readily allow you to downshift--ie, the gear will go no
higher than indicated. No problem.
First Q: How is a forced downshift accomplished, from both mechanical and
'pyooter povs?
Q 2.: Wouldn't forcing a upshift--ie, the gear will go *no lower* than
indicated--be...

Wear in an auto transmission... by
Proctologically Violated©®
Awl--
A mechanic once told me *not* to coast in neutral down long highway hills,
to eke out more mpgs, and then throw the car in drive, as I would sooner or
later lose my tranny.
Even if I bump up the rpm's in the engine to the coasting rpms before
shifting back.
iow, if I'm coasting downhill...

antifreeze question by
George[_10_]
Backstory: '99 Cavalier 2.2. Coolant was low. Then, very low.
Thinking it had a leak, and needing to drive it, I added straight water.
I drove it like that for a couple of weeks like that, and the water
level in the surge tank stayed the same. (So, there's still a question
as to why the coolant...

my car roars by
[email protected]
I have a 1999 Honda Accord EX five speed. It started roaring a bit
ago and everyone told me that I needed a new muffler. So I went to
have that done, and they told me that there was nothing wrong with it.
I took it to my mechanic and he said that maybe it was my tires. I got
new tires today and it...

Deville Seat and Mirror Problems by
hvsteve
I have an '01 Deville. There are two ongoing problems, one of which
the dealer dealt with after a lot of hassle and the other which they
can't seem to fix.
Last December the heaters in both front seats failed. They were
repaired under warranty (GMPP) but, when I got the car back, the
leather...

Help request - NOx doubled in dyno inspection by
JMH
Hi,
This is the same situation I had the last time I went for
inspection... Nox on my 91 BMW 318i failed. Only this time, it has
doubled from the accepted level! My car an E30 318i with the M42 1.8L
engine was designed without an EGR or any other sort of NOx control,
except, i suppose for the...

Car stereos: some inneresting fyi by
Proctologically Violated©®
Awl--
I've posted about removing the stereo from my 1990 Mazda 929S, and some may
think, Why Bother?
The reason is this:
For nigh-on 20 years or more, radio reception at various apts/homes has just
sucked, for me and neighbors. Even on top floors of 12 story apt buildings.
And this is NYC...

compression test variance by
[email protected]
Ran a compression test on my car because it had been running hot. Was
told that it could be a head issue.
Cylinders 1, 2 and 4 had the same result: 185 psi.
Cylinder 3, however, was way out of whack. 162 psi. Squirted three
shots of motor oil into the cylinder, ran the test again, and...
