Battery - Alternator problem? 96 4WD Explorer by
Wil Swaloe
I bought a new battery for my 96 Explorer 4WD V6 5 days ago. I stopped to
get gas, and had to get it jump started. I went back to AutoZone, they
checked the battery and the alternator. They said both were fine. They
recleaned the terminals and it started up. I also just had the transmission
rebuilt...

Engine Races in Park on 98 SOHC by
JLC
Sometimes my 98 Explorer races while in park, but when drive is engaged the
engine idles down to a reasonable level, but is still higher than normal.
The truck will do this when warm or cold but intermittently. Is there any
linkage/cables that may be getting stuck or a throttle piece that I can...

symptoms of xfer case seal leakage? by
pehoffer
I have a 99 EB Explorer. At the front of the xfer case, there's ATF
sprayed up on the underside of the body, and there's some that drips
off the case itself. It doesn't leak on the ground when parked, but
after I drive it I see the fluid sprayed up under. I pulled off the
vent tube and I can blow...

Rear Window Replacement by
CWLee
I made a stupid mistake today, and failed to close the back
upper window/door on my 2000 Explorer before I backed out of
the garage. It hit part of the garage door and shattered.
Ford quotes about $650, parts and labor, to replace it.
How does that compare to what any of you have spent to...

98 Explorer Belt Tensioner Replacement by
[email protected]
I am thinking about replacing/checking by Tensioner because I am
hearing a droning noise when the truck is idling. Seems to be more
prominent in very hot weather.
I understand this is relatively easy to do. I took a look under the
hood, and there's a belt diagram that easily identifies the...

Hard downshifts when towing by
Larry[_3_]
Hello:
I've got a 2002 Explorer with the 4.6l V8, auto trans, and 4x4. I
use it to tow a 4000 lb boat through mountain highways.
Since new I've had trouble getting smooth downshifts when towing
up hills. If, anticipating an upcoming hill, I ease on the throttle
and downshift manually...

Grinding noise from wheel (99 Mountaineer AWD) by
J. Doh[_1_]
My left rear wheel recently started making a grinding noise (right after
having the rear discs replaced). It is worst at low speeds (up to 20-25 mph)
and most notably, it gets much worse when cornering either left or right,
especially left. It seemed to disappear a few days after having the...

rear gate hatch latch disengaged by
mzclassic
I have a 02' ford explorer sport and the other day I went to open the
rear door and it would not open as usual, then I felt that the grip
handle on the door latch had lost the tension that I was used to
feeling when opening it. I also notice where it has somewhat disengaged
on the right side but...

Automatic Ride Control by
STEPHEN SAUNDERS
Hey Group,
Can anyone tell me if my 1999 Explorer 2WD 4.0 SOHC has this feature and
what could go wrong with it?
Also, I suspect that the knocking sound (very faint) and the rapping that I
can feel through the steering wheel is wheel bearing related. This problem
only presents when the...

Explorer Tires by
MS Jordan
My 98 is in need of new tires, the last two sets I put on were Michilin
XLT's.
Just not wanting to be blind is there a online source that rates the
different brands or is there a concensus on a brand and type.
My only complaint witht he XLT's is road noise and would like to find
something a...

Clutch Replacement Success Story by
Mark Barrett
I have a 95 Explorer with 245000 miles used manily by my
17 year son. Recently he decided to take it out off-roading
and completely burned out the clutch. I told him the only way
it was getting fixed is if we did all of the work ourselves.
It took many hours of work but we got it done and it has...

98 SOHC belts and hoses by
Uncle Fester[_1_]
I asked my dealer for a quote on belts and hoses and got a quote of $90
for the belt, and 9 hoses at $325 total parts and over $200 labor. I
didn't even know I had 9 hoses!! I'm in AZ where I don't want to skimp
on replacement of rubber parts, but I am probably way late on having
this maintenance...

My 92 Explorer stinks ... literally. Smells like something's died. Smells
all the time but is much worse when the A/C is on. Pulled the fan and the

intermittently. Followed soon thereafter by some weak starts and
replacement of the battery. The...
