Surprising increase in truck MPG by
Ignoramus15242
I have a Chevy Silverado pickup that is by now about 18 months old.
I was never able to get more that about 220 miles out of a 22 gallon
tank of gas, sometimes even less.
However, the last three refills, gave me 280, 266, and 283 miles per
refill. (I usually run until my tanks gets fully empty,...

$20,000 over sticker for Chevy Volt is simply supply and demand by
john
"So you think the Chevrolet Volt electric car will cost too much? Tell
that to the Chevy dealer who has already decided to charge $20,000
over the sticker price.
That's right. Months before the first Volt lands on a showroom floor,
there's enough excitement that the dealer -- who earns a...

the importance of thermostats by
jim beam[_4_]
someone i know recently demonstrated that their modern function is
apparently poorly understood.
back in the day, a thermostat just sat on the high side of an engine,
and opened when the coolant temp convecting around it raised enough. if
there was a problem, like the thermostat failing...

better mileage with higher octane? by
dido
is there any truth to the statement that using a higher octane gasoline will result in
better gas mileage? I understand that it may have other beneficial properties ie.
anti-knock, acceleration, etc..
how would one calculate such a statement?
for reference, I usually fillup between 16-20...

Hi,
I have a 1993 Toyota Corolla with 265k miles on it. There is a

Which pad is "better?" Ceramic or semi-metallic? by
Nate Nagel[_2_]
Looking for experiences... Used ceramic on last brake job and am very
happy with them. Need to buy brakes for another vehicle tomorrow, and
when I called the parts store the guy said that semi-metallic were
noisier and dustier but "would handle the heat better" if I were to use
a vehicle for...

2012 Ford Focus Gets 40 MPG Highway, Pressuring Hybrids by
john
Ford expects that its 2012 Ford Focus, which will be shown at the
Paris Motor Show, will get 40 miles per gallon on the highway, an 18%
improvement over the current model.
That would make the Focus compact car the most fuel-efficient car in
its class and provide Ford with a marketing tool that...

How reliable are turbo engines? by
223rem[_2_]
It would seem that a high RPM, small high-output engine (for ex. Subaru
WRX STI or Mitsubishi Evo) cannot last too long. The stress on its
components is
just too much. Can such an engine last, say, 150,000 miles without
major repairs?
Is there any special, expesnive maintanance that a turbo...

Driving Without A Thermostat by
[email protected]
I need your opinions on this.
A friend told me that a thermostat in a car is not necessary for proper
engine operation and that the thermostat is mainly there to provide
heat for people in the car. He said that cooler engines run better, are
more powerful, last a lot longer, and provides more...

Outside edge of front tires stairstepping by
Chaya Eve
Is it normal for the outside edges of the front tires to be stairstepping
on the outer inch or two only?
By stairstepping, I mean that you can't see the wear all that much but if
you rub your hand over the tread in one direction, you can feel a lip on
each side swipe tread.
If you run your hand...

('04 Cavalier, but I think I've seen this in other Cavs over the years.)
This car has single-piston disk brakes in the front. The piston pushes
on the inside pad. But, the outside pad had much more wear. For the
outside pad to operate, AIUI, the piston pushes the inside pad against
the rotor,...

Alcohol as a fuel by
JP White
I went on business trip the Brasil last week. Pretty much all the gas
stations sold alcohol as a fuel and at most if not all pumps. (I didn't
know enough Portuguese to be able to ascertain if it's 100% alcohol or a
mix with gas). The price was about 1/2 that of gas, tho at $3.50 a
gallon that's no...

Went to O'Reillys but their conventional was more expensive than synthetic.
I had Costco look up...

Toyota loses its way by

Yoshi Inaba sounds like a clairvoyant. ;) I wonder if there will be
charges and arrests in the Toyota case as the Japanese government did
in the Mitsubishi case.
