control arm bushing: where to drill floor? by [email protected]
'07 Cobalt LS. I (finally) replaced the passenger-side CAB. On that side, the 'cage nut' on top of the sub-frame is (barely) accessible from below, and I was able to replace it. On the driver's side, access to the nut/cage is much more restricted. I don't see any way to get at it from below, and...

bolt/nut grades by [email protected]
I have to replace an M14 class 10.9 (SAE grade 8, AIUI). I can get the bolt locally. But, at the same store, or anywhere ex online, the highest grade nut available is class 8.8 (SAE grade 5). So, my question really is, can I use the class 8.8 in this situation. But, more generally, is it the...

How to choose the best balanced tire when selecting by red & yellow dots out of a large selection of tires? by Tomos Davies
Given that you can have manufacturers' red and yellow match mounting balancing dots can occur at any location on the tire sidewall, which, theoretically, is the "most balanced" tire (out of the box) when chosen out of a large selection of tires? a. When the red and yellow dots are at or near the...

I have a 2004 grandprix with non turbo 3.8L it is leaking slightly from the thermostat housing to intake area. None of the autoparts stores seem to list a gasket for this. they show the rubber gasket for the thermostat, but not a thermostat housing gasket. But if you look for a replacement...

How to adjust alternator belt on 1999 Lexus ES300? by [email protected]
Dear Experts, I have a 1999 ES300, V6. Very similar to the Camry V6. I'm visiting Canada now (with the car), and it's really cold. For those of you who don't know, rubber is contrarian; rubber actually expands in the cold.

Any use for a 19/32" socket or wrench? by N8N
My understanding is that the only xx/32" size currently useful for any SAE fasteners is 11/32" (no. 8 hex head machine screw) - got a 19/32" socket in a lot of stuff that I picked up for cheap, mostly to get some socket extensions that looked useful. Is there any use for it on modern equipment, or...

What causes a spark plug terminal to corrode through inside the insulator? by [email protected]
Encountered something new. Had an intermittent miss on my '99 Explorer so I changed the plugs that were in it when I got it. On one of the plugs when I pulled the boot the plug terminal came with it. Just pulled right out of the center of the ceramic insulator. As it happened when I then put a...

GM going overboard with jetsam by [email protected]
Recently GM has sold off various divisions in Africa, Asia and Europe and is closing the factory at Holden, which will become a mere badge. So have they just had a gutful of burning cash, or are they saving up to takeover somebody else?

radiators by [email protected]
I need one. The 1994 Saturn SL2 has a plastic topped radiator. There is a crack, which was plugged with plumbers epoxy, or I should says used to be plugged. Now, in the old days I would assume some crusty WWII vet would just braze the hell out of any suspicious spot. Any idea of what folks do to...

2000 Olds Bravada problem by [email protected]
My 2000 Olds Bravada wouldn't crank. There was 12V present on one of the coil terminals with the key on. There is a small module next to the coil with a 4 terminal plug. It looks like it's on a heat sink with silicone grease. I don't know if this is an ignition module but it also had 12V on one of...
