Pruning Alternanthera reineckii by Tom Otvos
I have a relatively new (2 months) planted aquarium (Eclipse 12, so not very big). My question has to do with pruning stem plants, particularly Alt. reineckii. I notice on my plants, of which I have about 8 stems, that there are what appear to be roots growing from the points at which leaves...

controlling algae by Carmine J. Ventura JR
Hello all, Just wanted to post a suggestion on controlling algae that worked for me. It only took me 2 years to figure it out, up to this point I have tried everything and it did not work. The solution was very simple. I just got a plastic container, filled it with distilled water, added all the...

Reply for Kenneth by Dances With Ferrets
While I admit that Flourite is attractive on it's own, I would have to say that my method has mostly due with the different nutrient complexes provided by the Onyx as opposed to just Flourite... it's the "shotgun" approach to nourishing plants.... two different nutrient-rich substrates combined...

Reverse Osmosis and Chloramines by The Outcaste
I stumbled across the following article (www.ccwa.com/chloramines.htm) that states that Reverse Osmosis will NOT remove chloramines from water. Also this is the first site I've found that lists a toxicity level for chlorine for fish -- 0.1 mg/l I don't use RO but have looked into it, and the...

26W compact fluorescent over a 10g? by tendirl
Hey folks, I'm planning on retrofitting my old goldfish tank with an AH Supply 2x13W CF kit. Will this be enough to grow light-hungry plants such as glossostigma or will I have to spring for a 1x36W or even a 2x36W kit?

How many watts per gallon with metal halide lighting by Scott Rogahn
I would like to set up a 55 to 100 gallon planted tank (I already have a planted 20 gal) To maintain 3 wpg florescent or even power compact seems to be a bit difficult, 8 4ft florescent tubes for 100 gal. So I think metal halide may be a better choice. Does the 3 wpg gallon rule apply to...

Several DIY Yeast CO2 System questions. by Dances With Ferrets
For any who may be familiar with the 2-liter-soda-bottle method of CO2 production... using baking soda as a buffering/stabilizing compound... Could someone tell me what the optimum mix of water, yeast, and baking soda would be using this method? (in case it makes a difference in the formula, the...

would 384W of PC lighting be enough? by Dave M. Picklyk
Would 384W of Power Compact lighting (4 X 96W) be enough for nearly "4wpg" in a 77 gallon tank? (48"x24"x16"). We have about 2 feet of height that this light has to penetrate strongly. I'm pricing out some retrofit kits that go from 220watts (4X55) to 440watts (8X55W). I realize that PC lighting is...

Bulb recommendation.. by Phil Williamson
I've got a 20gal tank with two 15watt bulbs on it (two separate light fixtures), 1 powerglo and a sunglo. Now, my LFS told me the best light setup would be to put two powerglo's in there, what do you guys think? I need to replace both bulbs shortly and I want to get it right the first...
