Effects of fertilizers on nature by [email protected]
Hello All, After I saw this photo of an enormous flower ( http://www.igman.com/misc/fertilizers-on-your-front-lawn )I had to ask myself if this plant was for real? Or, was this plant engineered by humans, and carefully fertilized by super potent miracle grow and other potent fertilizers. If it's...

Any Tricks For Wintering Water Hyacinths and Water Lettuce Inside? by Mud
I am trying to save a few of my water hyacinths and water lettuce inside my house in buckets of water. I am changing the water out each week, pinching off any dead leaves/pieces and they're staying alive so far although not seeming to grow any. Do they need anything special to winter...

first freeze on the ponds by Gail Futoran
Those of you in northern climes have no doubt already experienced this. We had our first hard freeze last night. Ice on the two above-ground ponds (stock tanks) was fairly thick but I was able to carefully pull off most of it and will cover the ponds tonight to minimize freezing. Temps will warm...

Derek/water celery by ~ jan jjspond
Derek, you once-upon-a-time mentioned plants that had frozen solid and come back. Any experience with flamingo water celery/parsley? Will it come back if the whole thing is frozen solid? Replies welcome from anyone else that has experience. :) ~ jan ---------------- See my ponds thru the seasons...

Fancy Goldfish.... by Koi-lo
....don't do well in ponds due to their poor vision (depending on what type) and slow swimming. They fall easy prey to predators. Not all are in the extreme though. I found bubble eyes that have small bubbles and can see! They're still different and very attractive. These will spend the summer...

Another freezing day at the ponds by Koi-lo
The little powerheads are working better than the air-stones did by keeping a larger hole in the ice. They're facing the surface of the water so as not to disturb the bottom layers. These were mail order and less than $15 each. :-) Other than make sure they don't clog there's nothing more to do...

Ice on the ponds by Koi-lo
Another morning and the ice is back on the ponds. This year I have small powerhead type pumps keeping a hole in the ice. The last few winters they didn't freeze over. This year it's been colder. We haven't seen the turtle in a few weeks. The last time he was spotted he was in the small amount...
