Driving an old genuine Hydramatic by
Ashton Crusher[_2_]
Has anyone ever driven a car with an actual Hydramatic transmission in
it. The first ones that didn't have a torque converter and that had
two fluid clutches? If so, what did the "shifts" feel like? From
what I read, they shifted at least partly by filling and emptying the
fluid couplings.

water pump impeller gone bad? by
Ashton Crusher[_2_]
I put a new water pump on my 92 explorer less then 10,000 miles ago.
It was OK at that time. Now it runs much hotter then it ever used to,
getting up to around 240 on mountain grades. I changed out the
thermostat, hoses, and anti-freeze but it still is running hotter then
it ever did before. ...

Car AC theory question by
Ashton Crusher[_2_]
AC condensers (the part that's in front of the radiator) can be
purchased in bare aluminum or painted black. The purpose is to
transfer heat to the air. It seems to me that for maximum heat
transfer the best choice would be the bare aluminum. If it has paint
on it it seems like the paint would...

Speaking of Powered Liftgates...and 6 speed automatics by
Ashton Crusher[_2_]
rented a Dodge Caravan for a week. Had powered sliding side doors and
powered lift gate. Cool. But once the cool wore off all the powered
bull**** does it make opening and closing the darn things much slower
then non-powered ones. And of course there's more stuff to break. I
know they have to...

different gas, different gas mileage by
Ashton Crusher[_2_]
I've always liked chevron gas because it has techroline, which is one
of the best fuel detergents. But I've noticed lately that when I buy
Chevron my 2009 PT seems to get about 2 - 3 mpg worse gas mileage. My
other typical fill up is some "FastGas" type place. This change has
happened often...

Toyota just lost a sale by

After the news came out about the unintended acceleration problem that
killed the cop and his family one of the ladies in my office said she
was ruling out buying a Highlander as a result. She wants to get a
bigger car for her family and was looking at Highlanders but not
anymore. Frankly I was...

oil filter comtamination by
Ashton Crusher[_2_]
Has anyone ever taken apart the oil filter on a properly running car
and found any "stuff" in it? I've cut open a couple and there was
nothing in the filter to speak of. The very bottom of the pleats had
a very small amount of "gunk" and of course the pleats were somewhat
discolored. With all...

air filter brand and change interval question by
Ashton Crusher[_2_]
So, aside from oil and filters, what are people doing for air filter
change intervals, do you follow the maintenance schedule in the owners
manual, or ????
Most of my vehicles have called for changes at around 15 or 20K miles
and that's more or less when I change the filter. Only exception is
if...

Why does my car ac system keep blowing up? by
Ashton Crusher[_2_]
Twice now my 92 Explorer has "blown" the compressor. In both cases
it blew very shortly, within minutes, of starting the truck. It blew
so shortly after starting the truck I have a hard time seeing how the
pressure could be high enough to "blow" but in both cases it popped
the high pressure...
