newbie needs offroad faq/primer/recommendations by bohemian
I admit to never driving anything more than my Subaru Outback which I traded in on a Toyota. I need a 4WD with good tires and clearance to drive dirt/rock poor roads and in snow, primarily for photographic expeditions into the wilderness.... Been looking at Jeeps, Toyota pickups, attracted to the...

Jeep Serpinteen Belt by cover
I've posted a pic of a serpentine belt we removed after only being on a week from a '92 Jeep. Not sure if it's a case of just super old material (on the store rack for 2 years) or what that caused it to fray and break. Couldn't find any obvious problem with bearings or pulleys as a possible cause...

Clunking in front of 2004 Ford F250 and other questions - 4x4 newbie by [email protected]
First off, I am familiar with cars but this is my first 4x4. My truck has a clunking sensation from the front when turning in a tight radius, it's worse in 4 wheel drive. I've replaced CV joints in front wheel drive cars and the symptoms seem to be the same. What am I likely looking at here as my...

97 Jeep Cherokee - No Spark by [email protected]
I have a 97 cherokee 4.0L Auto, with just 68K miles. In three years all I have had to do is basic servicing. I have had zero faults. Last weekend it would not start (no spark or fuel being injected), and a friend towed me home. I have since spent several hours on the web to try and find a fix. I...

ML430 by Clueless in Sterling
Anyone here been out 4 wheeling with their MLs? I take mine out every chance I get, in the snow too!, and the sand. Not as serious as most folks who have modified their rigs. I did installed larger tires on mine with more 'teeth' on them. :^)

Fuel starvation by Robert Ball
I can't get fuel from the tank on 79 Scout II. Carb so it just has a sock type filter in the tank, pump is on the engine. I know line is clear after the tank and pump is OK because I hung gallon can from door handle, put line between tank and pump into the can and moved it from the driveway to...

transmission question by Nobody
I would like some opinions about my idea of increasing the life of my automatic tranny. When I run up on slow changing lights or stoped traffic like at train tracks I like to shift my tranny into N. Do you feel this reduces wear or actually increases wear or does not make any difference. Im...

4x4 Locked hubs for extended periods on pavement... by [email protected]
I just bought a 2000 Nissan Frontier. I took it on a 6 hour road trip, and right at the beginning of the trip I had to put the truck in 4x4 Hi to drive over a snowy and icy pass. I shifted the 4x4 lever back to 2 Hi, but didn't realize I had to reverse the vehicle to get it out of 4wd. I...

What 4X4 (or all wheel drive) convertibles are there? by Dav
Hi, I live in Colorado where it is very sunny but can get snowy at times. So, I would like a car that is a convertible but can handle the snow. Other than the Jeep Wrangler, what other convertibles are 4X4 or all wheel drive? Thanks,

Jeep Cherokee distributor issue by Paul Bramscher
Winter's finally hit us here in Minnesota. When I go to start my '98 Jeep Cherokee (4.0 liter, 100K miles) there's a high pitched wining sound that goes away in 2-3 minutes. I first assumed it was a belt, but then placed my hand on the distributor cap. I felt vibrations there, which went away...

Mystery Small Oriental 4WD? by [email protected]
Among the pics of the awful tsunami damage, is a shot of what looks just like a Zuke Samurai that has an extended cab & a blocked-off rear bed area. Anyone know what such a vehicle may be?

Auto Transmission Slips Only When Cold by Marty
I have an automatic V6 1990 Toyota 4Runner with real high mileage. It runs great except when cold. When I come to the first complete stop after starting up in the morning, it slips into neutral for a couple of seconds then back into gear. It's fine when warmed up. Any ideas? Thx.

which 3/4 ton has smoothest ride? by don
I've got a 1/2 Suburban and I want to upgrade so I can tow more. Unfotunately, I also have some scarred sciatic nerves that hurt more when subjected to rough rides. The suburban is great, great seat support, sits up high and overall I can tolerate its bumps pretty well. I know the next size up is...
