'96 Explorer XLT Inside Dome/Courtesy Lights by
Fred 2
Can anyone with a four door '96 Explorer XLT B-trim (high console
trim, etc) verify if when a door is opened as to whether the front
over head lights (by the compass/thermometer), the lights above the
rear passenger seats, and the light in the cargo area by the hatch
glass all turn on.
On mine...

'96 Explorer XLT: Best location for tube subwoofer? by
Bob
I just installed a Bazooka EL8A 8" amplified sub in my 1996 Ford
Explorer. Does anyone have any recommendations on the best location
for it? Now I have it just behind the rear seat facing back towards
the rear hatch due to wire length restrictions, but I'm willing to
extend the wires if there is...

'96 Explorer: Unable to release engine hood by
Bob
I went to get an oil change the other day only to discover that the
engine hood would not open. When you pull the latch release inside the
vehicle, nothing happens...it's as if the cable has stretched or
something. A guy at the oil change place was able to finally get the
latch released by...

'96 V-6 XLT Intermittent Starting Problem Solved by
Len Krauss[_2_]
Now and then, for no apparent reason, my Explorer would crank but not start.
There was no noted pattern -- happened 5-6 times a week intermittently and
randomly with engine hot and cold. No OBD codes stored. Spraying starting
fluid in the air intake while cranking would enable starting....

'96 XLT 4Dr Rear springs sagging? by
Just_Steve
Am wondering if there is a way to determine if the rear springs on my '96
(106k miles) are sagging, or if it's just my imagination? It seems to ride
rougher than in the past, and I seem to get more people flashing headlights
as if my high-beams were on. Is even worse with two people riding in back...

'96 XLT replace steering rack by
Jchick
I have a leaking steering rack that drips through the worn boot. It's
making my driveway a mess. I think I am going to have to replace the
rack. Does anyone know of a step by step guide for rack replacement for
a Do-It-Yourselfer? The local garage wants $600.
Thanks

'96 XLT V8 Speaker Shutdown by
The Ranger[_2_]
When we got this vehicle, the sound system was truly a step up
from anything I'd enjoyed in a vehicle prior. I was never an
audiophile in an extreme sense but loved being able to listen to
the subtleties that a better system allowed.
Recently, though, speaker after speaker has started to rattle...

'97 compressor not running by
s_landa
I can turn the compressor, but it won't "engage." The fanbelt part turns.
the inner part turns by hand. Is there a thermal switch that kicks on the
clutch?
I've looked for a fuse, but no luck. Is there a "short" that would force
it to work?

'97 Control Trac Problem--Won't Disengage 4WD by
Ulysses
I have a 1997 Control Trac 4.0L OHV with about 130,000 miles on it.
With the selector set on Auto (choices are Auto, 4H and 4L) 4WD is engaged
all the time. This is based upon the fact that it's clumping while turning,
even on hard dirt (almost new Michelin LTX tires). I did the 'ol clean...

'97 Coolant recovery question by
[email protected]
When the engine is hot, excess coolant transfers to the coolant
recovery tank.
When the engine cools (overnight), the coolant does not return to the
radiator.
When I remove the radiator cap, I can tell I'm breaking a vacuum.
Is this a radiator cap problem? - Mike

'97 Explorer 4.0 SOHC - Hard start in cold by
Rick N Pam
My '97 Explorer has developed a starting issue in cold weather. I turn the
key and it starts immediately, runs for a second or two and shuts off. I
have to repeat the process numerous times before it will stay running. At
first, I thought the battery voltage was sagging because it is at least 8...

'97 Explorer flood caused oil leak by
Joe
OK, here is my problem. I'm an idiot and accidentally drove my '97 AWD
V8 XLT (which was in great condition) into 2 feet of water and got
stuck. No, I didn't know it was 2 feet, and no I should not have driven
into it not knowing how deep it was. With that out of the way, here is
my problem...

'97 Explorer front end "clunk" while accelerating by
Joe Rizza
I just got my '97 AWD V8 back from Ford after they replaced the rear
main seal (ouch). Maybe in my head, but something wasn't right with it
since I got it back.
Today, I was pulling away from a traffic light at about 10 m.p.h, and
stepped on it. As it was accelerating, I heard two loud "clunks"...

'97 Explorer Strange Starting Problem by
Ulysses
I'm having a problem with my '97 (4.0 OHV). It seemed like the longer it sat
the longer it was taking to start when cranking the engine. I thought it was
a fuel problem but a few days ago it wouldn't start at all. I checked for
spark with a timing light and NO SPARK. I can hear the fuel pump...

'97 Explorer--Backfire??? by
pastorjeffhughes
My wife's 1997 Explorer has what seems to be a backfire occaisionally.
When you accelerate moderately, it bucks some and it sounds almost like a
"cough" somewhere near the catalytic converter. It seems as though the
sparkplug may be firing late, but I'm not sure. Any ideas?

Jeff

'97 explorer; problem starting engine on an incline by
Derek
I have this crazy problem that just started happening with my '97 Explorer
XLT SOHC
(142k miles).
My home driveway slopes downward toward my garage and when I park the front
of the
truck is lower than the back. The angle is not too great. I would guess 20
degrees.
When my gas tank is about 1/3...
