DOHC, SOHC, NOHC Performance benefits, or hype? by phaeton
Seems that you hear a lot of buzz in the auto world about how many overhead cams something has. I hear a *LOT* of the buying public, the ones that I would essentially label as 'sheep' (no offense to them, though), talking about overhead camshafts as a 'performance' feature. These would be the same...

different long term fuel trim idling in park vs in drive? by [email protected]
I'm trying to troubleshoot an HC emissions failure in a 94 Chevy Suburban 5..7 liter with TBI and one heated O2 sensor. Over several minutes idling in park the long term fuel trim will creep down to around 100 (with 128 being stoichiometric). So this works out to like -22% or so if I'm reading it...

Checking belt alignment by [email protected]
I have an intermittent noise in my wife's 2007 Ford Escape. I am looking for an easy and accurate way to check pulley alignment on the serpentine belt system. (Preferably without purchasing an expensive tool). I have read about garages using lasers to check them. (Of course it is an expensive tool...

car crash by [email protected]
After 37 years of flawless driving I've had my first crash. It was, of course not my fault. I was stuck in traffic and an SUV driver didn't bother to look where he was going. My '94 Saturn SL2 has as it's most serious problem broken brakes. Should I be able to locate and replace the hose as a...

Homework 10 home automotive repairs starting from an oil change and ending with engine replacement by Drago Giambattista Esposito
I'm taking a night class on auto maintenance in adult school. There is no grade and no tests. Just learning. And fun. The teacher asked today, the first class, for us to bring next week a list of the 10 things that people can do at home to repair their car, starting with number 1 being an oil...

LED lights on cars. TOO BRIGHT!!! by Ashton Crusher[_2_]
The latest fad on cars is to use LEDs for some of the front lights, particularly the DRLs, and use LEDs for brake lights. Naturally, the automakers have to overdo a good thing and have made these LEDs way too bright. Sitting behind someone at night who has their brakes on can blind you. And...

The $500 Prius car key.... by Existential Angst[_2_]
Has this been discussed here? If we let car companies get away with $500 keys, then we have basically pulled our pants down to our ankles, lubed ourselves up, painted a bullseye on our asses, bent over, and are screaming, C'mon, shove it in deeper/harder.... **** Prius and their car key. My...

Scraped Rear Bumper by J.B. Wood
Hello, all. Well, I guess it had to happen but someone scraped the rear bumper this morning on my 2011 Ford Focus (not even a year old). There are no dents or gashes but numerous scratches, the worst one being deep enough to show the plastic below the paint. Can the deep scratches on the...

Polishing my headlights by micky
3 weeks ago I polished my headlight lenses. They came out great. I had replaced a bulb and noticed again how cloudy they were, 2005 car. It took about 2 hours but would have taken less if my back didn't hurt and I had to sit down over and over, and if then I didn't start listening to the...
