Correct VIN? by micky
Looking to buy a car, check the VIN on carfax, and the repair history there conflicts with the seller's story about where the car has been. So maybe I copied the VIN wrong, probably just one digit, but the make and model of the car that carfax reports is the same as the one I'm looking at. Does...

BP, and others, from a previous thread by hls
I cautioned patience on the Gulf blowout situation regarding BP. As I said, this would come out in "the wash", so to speak. The things that are coming out are not good. One of the problems we have in the USA (and in the world) has to do with basic ethics. The BP I knew was strong on ethics. ...

Want to understand car behavior with kaput battery by brassplyer
I wanted to see if I could rejuvenate a battery that's dead and several years old but never saw much use. Sat in a car that mostly sits in the garage. I stuck it in my '89 Toyota Cressida, cleaned the terminals on the battery and the cable ends, hooked them up and jumped it with the good battery....

Specific question about octane rating with respect to compressionratio by Danny D
In an alt.home.repair thread, some were proposing 92 AKI gasoline for lawn equipment, where I questioned the logic, based on compression ratio alone. AFAIK, the octane rating just means the gas reacts differently to a given compression ratio (and other detonation factors such as heat &...

Reality hits below the belt :-( by The Real Bev[_5_]
So I finally decided it was time to take the '88 Caddy to the knackers. Two rejections out of hand, one offer of $115 if I drive it in ($65 if they have to pick it up), and I'm waiting for a callback from the Cadillac-only wrecker. Damn thing has 90K miles (engine and trans in what's...

Spark plugs indicate lean mix on carbureted V6 by Jack[_22_]
I have a brand new out of the box (not rebuilt) Holley 2280 replacement carburetor bolted onto a 1987 Dodge Dakota 3.9L V6 engine. The original was a Holley 6280, which is the feedback version of the 2280. The feedback solenoid for the 6280 is no longer available, so when mine went south, I opted...

Chrysler Fuel pump and battery Questions. by Mike Romain
Maybe someone here knows the answers to a couple questions a friend of mine has regarding Chrysler Fuel pumps and his battery. He has what he thinks is a dead fuel pump in his 94 Voyager. So he got a used pump and tested it with 12 volts to see it spin up. He then installed it and it still won't...

Aluminum head dings above cylinder- Repairable? by Joe S
Some metal debris (I don't yet know source....perhaps a valve guide disintegrated? Will know more tonight.) has resulted in a couple hundred dings on the head for that cylinder. Some I would even call gashes. Before I bother to take it to a machine shop, I thought I'd ask if I should bother to...

Why no rear lights with DRLs? by Don Stauffer
Here in Minnesota state law says lights must be on when driving in rain or impaired visibility. Lots of folks with DRLs ignore this, saying, hey, my DRLs take care of that. But on many (most?) cars with DRLs, the lights are only on in the front. I think rear lights are more needed in these...
