'92 BMW 535 problems by Ulf
After owning my '92 BMW 535 for a couple of weeks now I've noticed a few issues. First, there's a vibration in the steering wheel under soft to moderate braking between 40 - 70 mph. It isn't noticeable if I brake hard or outside the speed interval mentioned. The car also has a very nervous...

choosing a company for windshield replacement by [email protected]
My son's 97 Subaru Impreza has a cracked windshield. Too big to repair, it needs to be replaced. A little googling showed me several companies that will come out and do the replacement, with quotes in the $250 range. (The companies are windshield.net, Autoglass National, and 89 Glass. I'm sure...

My 2000 Ford Windstar has a "tone" coming from the engine compartment by [email protected]
I bought a 2000 Windstar LES about 2 months ago. I started hearing an audible "tone" coming from the engine compartment a week or so ago. It is louder outside the van than inside and it only seems to sound when it is idling. It disapears when I give it gas but comes back when I let off. It also...

How I solved my (slightly) high NOx emissions problem by [email protected]
I have a 1996 Mazda Protiege that was BARELY failing my state's emissions test (reading 3.12; my state allows 3.00 max). The car had been recently tuned up, so I knew the usual culprits (EGR valve, timing, etc) were not the problem. I figured I could pass the test if I could get my engine temp up...

Air filters and milage by Don Stauffer
I keep hearing how a dirty filter greatly reduces milage. I can see how this is true for really old engines, before emission controls and EFI. In those days, carbs used venturi pressure and vented float chamber to atmosphere. Then a reduction in the air pressure at carb intake caused by pressure...

why doesn't low oil *level* activate the idiot light? by Ted Johnson
I think we all agree that: o low oil *pressure* is bad, and... o low oil *level* is bad ---- So... why is it that (on most cars), the idiot light doesn't measure both of these? Ie, why is it that case that (in most cars) the "Oil!" idiot light only light up when oil *pressure* is low?

Re-blown 94 4runner head gasket warranties? by [email protected]
Apparently the head gastket fix on the recalled 4runners isn't all one might hope as the used '93 I just bought blew almost immediately. The local toyota dealer informed me that it was replaced once under the recall and they will not cover it again. It has 124K miles on it so I am guessing this...

Hello, A month ago the service engine soon light came on in my trusty Olds with 112K miles. The first thing I thought was, how soon? I bought the car new in May of 1990 and have maintained it very well. The engine is idling slower is the only symptom it exhibits. Sometimes there is a very...

Window glass not flush with moulding - 1989 Ford Probe by [email protected]
For those familiar with '89-'92 Ford Probes, the power window regulators will fail (not if, but when) due to plastic pullies. These are frameless door windows (like Camaros). I finally went ahead and replaced both (failed) door regulator/motor assemblies with new aftermarket parts. After installing...
