finding a short circuit by [email protected]
Is there a systematic way, not involving expensive or sophisticated instruments, to track down a short circuit? I have an old ('82) Chevy Malibu in which the Clock/Courtesy fuse (20 Amp) continues to blow. Naturally, lots of things are on this circuit (horn, clock, dome light, alert buzzer, trunk...

2nd odometer useless by [email protected]
Every car I have owned has the normal odometer that keeps track of the actual miles. There is another one on the speedometer that has only 3 digits and the tenths. I have used it once to a trip to Florida. Although, I will be returning no matter how far it is. I might have used it a very...

The engine and the electric motor by Triple-MIGHT
BEFORE POSTING: This thread is STRICTLY about electric motors Vs. Piston engines with shaft (yes I know engines need a clutch) connected to shaft duel and therefore no thread should be about their abilities in cars, the weight advantage they have, or the power source, etc... Okay now that is out...

Bad battery and engine noise by Steven O.
I have an older car, a '93 Geo Prizm, which I need to replace sometime soon, but I'm still using till I'm better prepared for a new car purchase. In the meantime, I've been having various problems with it over the past year or so. One issue was the emergence of a growing loudness in the...

engine pinging sound - 97 Accord 165K by [email protected]
My car has been running quite well for a while. However recently during a road trip in Vegas, my engine is pinging when I accelerate. I had a full tuneup about 10K ago and an oil change about 2K ago. I thought it was bad gas (I always use 87) and have been filling up with Chevron lately, but I...

Replace stearing wheel on car w/airbag? by [email protected]
Is it possible to substitute another steering wheel on a car that has an airbag? Does it have to be from a car of the same manuf.? Same model? I'd like a leather steering wheel, but the truck model I'm thinking of getting didn't offer it. However, I think the SUV of the same maker did, and/or...

Air conditioning performance? 94-97 Accord (trying to figure out if I need R134a fill) by [email protected][_1_]
I have a 97 Accord with about 180K miles. I had my air conditioning refilled with R134a two years ago. I almost always run the AC even in cooler weather. So perhaps its ready for another refil. I recently headed on a road trip through the Southwest. Its 110 degrees here in Las Vegas. The air...

Braking problem by Shiny
Hello, I recently bought a new car, a 2004 Corolla. It drives well. I had no problems with it until I put on snow tires a couple weeks ago. Ever since then, when I am driving (in clear, dry, cold conditions) on the highway I find that the car will sometimes slide to the right, or shimmy from...

learning auto mechanic at home by Abbas
What do you think about learning auto mechanic course study-from-home? I'm interested in "professional careeer development institute". I will be doing just for know-how. I'm not doing it for adopting as career but just know how. My only concern is that what I'll be learning on my own with tools...

Problem: The Air conditioner starts working while its switch is off by BDay
Hi there, I've just bought a secondhand 2000 Mazda 626 Lx in very good condition except for one odd problem: when I try to select the Defroster Air Flow mode (air towards the windshield) the air conditioner starts working by it-self, even if the it's switch is off. Any suggestion?

Tires okay after wheel change? by Mark Carroll
If I get my garage to move tires from one set of wheels to another (both sets of appropriate size) will my tires still be okay, or is there too much risk of them getting damaged in being taken off the rims from the first set? -- Mark
