Car stopped using oil (sort of) by
Ivan Vegvary[_2_]
1995 Toyota Tercel, 206,000 miles, 36 mpg average.
This is my run-around car. Paid $600 when it had 160,000 miles. Back then it used a little more than one quart per fill-up (300 miles ±). Have a spare low mileage (120,000 miles) wreck on hand, and meant to change engines if things got worse,...

when did valve overlap originate? by
[email protected]
The first internal combustion engines did not have exhaust
and intake valves open at the same time.
When did it occur to somebody that overlap would improve
performance, and when was this adopted by all engine makers?
(I am not considering modern variable camshaft systems, just
the basic fixed...

GM slashes Chevy Volt prices to spur flagging sales by
David E. Powell
The problem is an electric that charges has a relatively long charge time.
A hybrid still requires a gasoline motor, even a plug in one, and there is a weight penalty to the system, plus an increase in cost from having dual systems.
There are some neat specialty cars but the cost is high for...

Torx bits twisting by
bob
I have had two instances lately where the splines of some of my torx
tools twisted. Granted, it was a more HD application, but i have never
had this happen in the past. I had a three tool set from harbor t40 t45
t50 that i tried to use to take a seat belt holder off on a Taurus.
It would not...

nissan sentra hard to start in hot weather by
[email protected]
hello i've got a routine fuel-injected car, a 2004 nissan sentra.
it usually has the trouble-free starting -- you turn the key, no
accelerator pumping, in fact the manual tells you NOT to pump.
however, i found as hot weather encroached these last 2 years, that if
i leave the car out where it's...

Off Topic, sort of. by
JR[_8_]
Have you ever been riding around and when you got back home and noticed somebody had set a partially empty soda pop can on the rear bumper of your vehicle? It has happened to me before.

Please help. So frustrated with this... by
[email protected]
I am so frustrated. I have a 1990 mustang with factory air.Last year, I attempted to retrofit the car. However, the receiver drier I purchased would not attach to the compressor manifold/blocks. Inside the low pressure block was some sort of clip or something that kept the hose that is part of the...

Specific question about octane rating with respect to compressionratio by
Danny D
In an alt.home.repair thread, some were proposing 92 AKI
gasoline for lawn equipment, where I questioned the logic,
based on compression ratio alone.
AFAIK, the octane rating just means the gas reacts differently
to a given compression ratio (and other detonation factors
such as heat &...

my rear wiper on A4 saloon is stuck in the upwards position
wiper motor? anything else?
what else: washer fluid leaks somewhere and not much gets to the rear
I guess
so if that's used for the wiper water lubrication it might have been a
contributing factor
running straight water in the washer...

Car hauling trucks. by
JR[_8_]
Years and years ago I used to see them on the highways, hauling new cars to the dealerships. I guess nowadays the dealerships send people to the Railheads to get the new cars and drive them to the dealerships.
