Grandaughter's vehicle... I'm a GM/Dodge guy, so limited experience with Fords! The shifter motor was replaced. Started as an intermittant problem, but became worse as time went on. Now happens all the time. In Low, it is 'drivable' (not a good idea, but it works), but in high and auto all one...

2003 Rear axle whine by Cedartown Electronics
2003 XLT 24K miles almost out of warranty first of August. Calcification on rear axle noise? I think my explorer in getting the famous rear end whine. At speeds between 40 and 65 there is a loud whining sound BUT when I take my foot off of the gas the whine sound quits. Is this what everyone...

Oil In Intake on '92 by Ulysses
When my '92 EB with the 4.0 V6 has been sitting for a while it will run rough when I first start it up and white smoke comes out of the tailpipe. There is oil in the intake (the plastic tube that goes from the air cleaner to the intake manifold) where the crankcase breather is connected to...

Tires by Jacob
I've got a 1995 XLT 4WD Explorer, and want to buy a set of new tires. I live in Wisconsin, and we get a fair amount of snow. I don't really do any off road driving, and want the best tire for the vehicle. By "best tire" I mean safety, noise, wet and dry traction. thanks.

Ford Explorer - interior odor by Just Surfing
Hey all, I have an '04 Explorer that is the victim of a stench on the inside. It's been going on about 5 months now. It's most noticable in the mornings when I go to the garage. At first I thought it might have been the trash can but the garage isn't smelly. After driving with the heat or A/C on...

TO JIM AND ALL READERS, I purchased my 99 explorer about a year ago. The warranty on it is through a third party warranty company. As you already know my tranny went and I brought it in to get serviced. (it was getting stuck in 4th gear at a stop light). Anyways I brought it in and they set it up...

Strange Dangerous Problem. Anyone Help? by Mike Palastanga
I have a 1999 Explorer XLT (72000 on clock, all but first 3000 mine) in UK. Was driving through town at 25 or so mph in traffic. Traffic ahead slowed so i touched the brakes. There was a strange metallic knocking noise, just like a spanner being dropped through the engine compartment, and the...

94 Explorer EB A/C issue by Sam[_3_]
Need help from the group. My vehicle A/C has been working fine this summer. Over the last week or two I have noticed a rise in the temperature the A/C outputs into the passenger compartment of my vehicle. Today I thought I would take a simple step and try to add refrigerant to the system. I...

Repair AutoHubs on '91-'94? by Ulysses
Has anyone sucessfully managed to repair the autohubs on the early Explorer (91-94)? Is there a repair kit anywhere? Ford wants something like $900 for new ones. I put Warn manuals on my '91 and the autohubs just failed on my wife's '92. I'm completely happy with the Warn hubs but my wife has...

1994 Explorer Pinging by Vern
My '94 Explorer pings horribly whenever I put regular octane gas in it. The pinging is worst when I accelerate. I've been putting premium gas in it and that helps quite a bit, but it still pings whenever I accelerate into a stiff wind. I've changed spark plugs, wires, air filter and fuel filter. ...

40K Service on 3 Yr Old Mountaineer V8 by D.D. Palmer
I scheduled some service on my 2003 '03 Mountaineer V8 that will be 3 years old on Sept 15th. I've never done anything under the hood except oil changes, a fuel filter at 30,000 miles and an air filter. The dealer suggests a tranny flush ($139) and a coolant drain and fill ($40). Or they can do a...

I have a '92 Explorer XLT (4x4 4.0 6 cylinder) that I've decided to get rid of. I've had it for about a year now but it needs a new head gasket and exhaust. Considering what I just paid for it not that long ago I don't feel like sinking much money into it. Besides for the gasket and exhaust...

Overdrive Queston by [email protected]
Hi all: I am new to this group and this is my first post. (I own a 2000 Ford explorer sport with the most basic no frill engine.) Here the very newbie question: What purpose does the O/D serve? Should I leave it on or off? Someone told me that leaving the O/D on was essential for highway driving...

best model year 1997-2000? by David J Burns
I live in the Greater Toronto Area, looking at buying my first SUV. After monitoring used car listings extensively over the last 6 weeks I've decided that an Explorer, with an outside chance of a Pathfinder, is my best bet give my $10,000 CAD limit. 4Runners, Xterras and CR-Vs depreciate too...
