Flashing O/D Light on 96 Explorer by netsurfca
I had the same thing happen on mine O/D light on and off. I would suggest changing the transmission fluid. As it turns out, when the fluid heated up, dirt was tripping the O/D sensor. That same dirt ended up fouling the whole transmission which I had to replace.

2002 Trailer hitch by Recoil Rob
My 2002 XLT came with a Class II, 1-1/4" receiver hitch. I'd like to replace it with a Class III, 2" hitch. Is it a simple matter of unbolting the original and bolting on the new one or is there some welding to contend with? Thanks, Rob

Spark plug replacement on 91 by DAVMO
Replaced the spark plugs last night. That right rear plug is a bitch to get at. The original plugs still fired, but after 14 years it didn't seem like a bad idea to switch. The gap had grown to about .075, somewhat over spec. I'm hoping to gain a little better gas mileage with the...

Volume control for JBL radio by radman123
I came up with a fix for this problem. Once you get into the radio and get the volume control switch out, you can carefully cut the melted plastic rivits off, leaving enough to re-melt to close it back. There is a small white nylon plastic slider inside the mechanism that is the problem. ...

'98, Factory Radio Replacement by coyotepx
I recently, replaced the factory radio with a Kenwood Excelon, something (###'s). I know that the new head unit has dimmer capabilities when the lights come on, however, I don't know which wire from the factory harness is for this. There are two wire harnesses for the factory radio but only...

shocks/struts by Derek
Just had my 97 Explorer XLT (135k miles) in the shop and they told me I needed new struts on the front and new shocks on the rear. What is the difference between shocks and struts and why does the front need one and the rear the other? Thank you.

Washboard effect? by George K.
I'm pretty new to this newsgroup and I saw a previous post about something about a washboard effect. It was for the 2002-2004 model year transmissions. I was wondering what the washboard effect is, could someone explain it to me. I too have a 2003 explorer 4.0 V6, so I was wondering what it...

Looking for directions to service front hubs (1994 4x4) by Chris
Hello everyone, It has been determined that my front left hub is not engaging, so I'm not getting power to the front wheels in 4 wheel drive. Quick check - since my front axle is not a limited-slip axle, does it make sense that as the front left hub isn't engaging (but the driveshaft...

HELP w/ placement of headliner fasteners by Scot

Those go-roundy-roundy things in the front (4WD) by Gordon S. Hlavenka
I've heard them called "front U-joints" and I've heard them called "Constant Velocity (CV) joints". Which is the proper term? I know in FWD vehicles they're called CV joints, but I don't know why; it seems to me their velocity should change as the vehicle speed changes. Same for 4WD. -- Gordon...
