Engine brake in Automatic gearbox by [email protected]
Hello. In an Automatic gearbox, instead of a clutch, there's a torque converter, right? Now, I know that in manual gearbox, engine brake happens because the engine is 100% connected to the wheels - so engine revs down = car slows down. However, in automatic gearbox, there's the torque converter -...

Sealer for cold mixture heater block by Art[_5_]
I'm replacing the carburetor on my 89 Toyota and the book I'm using said not to remove the cold mixture heater block. Well, it came out anyway and I cleaned it up. So, I'm wondering what kind of sealant I should use on the upper and lower surfaces and on the gaskets. Any recommendations? Thanks.

A/C expansion valve by Art[_7_]
I have a 95 Camry with a sick air conditioner. Blows cold for a while and then warm. The low side pumps down to a hard vacuum. The high side is at 90psi. The receiver outlet is not cold, so I don't think it's blocked. All that's left is the expansion valve, I think. Seems like a strange failure...

Ball joint dust cover by Art[_9_]
Okay, I removed the drive axles on my 1998 Nissan Altima, and installed replacements. I used a greased pickle fork on the tie rod ends and the control arm lower ball joints to get the old axles out, and, sure enough, the dust boots are torn and need to be replaced. Is there a replacement dust...

Drive axle removal by Art[_9_]
Am I being a bit of a wimp? I am removing the drive axles from my 1998 Altima, a task I have never undertaken before. Removing the passenger side axle posed no problem, but I am unable to remove the driver side axle. The Haynes manual says either pry the inner CV joint out at the transaxle, or...

2001 Dakota Hesitate, Misfire cold, noMIL lite by [email protected]
I have a 2001 Dodge Dakota with the 3.9L V-6. When the truck is first started, cold or after sitting for an hour, it hesitates, boggs, misses, etc. but there is no MIL (check engine) light. I have changed the Plugs (champion), wires, cap and rotor (all mopar) and it still misses. I took it to a...

GM Service Manual by [email protected]
Does anyone know where I can find a free Shop Service Manual (pdf) that covers GM pickup trucks from 1988 and newer? I found an old post that says there is one in a newsgroup but I couldn't seem to figure out how to access it.

Should I add oil to R134a? by [email protected]
I flushed the entire system, and installed a brand new compressor. The Haynes manual says I should pour 2oz of oil each into the evaporator and condensor before evacuating the system. However, my R134a bottle says that it has oil already mixed in it. My question is, should I add this oil, or should...

Cannot reach A/C high/low pressures by [email protected]
This is a 1990 Geo Metro. This car was previously converted to R134a. Recently I replaced the compressor and dryer. I did everything by the book. I flushed the system with isopropyl alcohol, replaced o-rings, evacuated, oiled it and held a vacuum for several hours. There were no leaks. I even...

Online TSB's? by asdf
Is there a free online source anywhere for TSB's? I mean the actual text of them? I've found a couple listed on the NHTSA site that I think may be relevant to my car (2004 Taurus) but haven't been able to find the actual bulletins unless I want to subscribe to a service. They're these: Service...

Do I need to check backlash after replacing the diff bearing? by [email protected]
I have an annoying noise from the rear axle of my '97 Camaro, which I suspect is one of my differential bearings that needs replacement. At the same time I'll get new thrust washers for my side gears, which will hopefully get rid of the annoying play in the drive axles. Anyway, after replacing...
