Platys and plants by
David J. Braunegg
We got our first aquarium four weeks ago--10 gallons, 2 Corys, and 2
Platys (male and female). We put two clumps of cutting plants in at the
two-week mark. The Platys decimated them.
Is it hopeless to try to grow plants with Platys, or is it related to
the fact that the female was voracious...

Whole 20 filled to the top with Anubias. by
Aaron
I started a tank with manure and potting soil a couple years
back and threw in some fern, anubias, and crypts. I set the
light on a timer and pretty much got busy with other things and
neglected it, only feeding the fish a few times a week. Now I
see, the anubias took over and the crypt and fern...

tall background plants by
Starfish
Hi
I was wondering if anyone can tell me what good tall background plant would
be that doesnt really require co2 or gravel (or can be planted in
rectangular planters)
Its for a GF tank, so it can't be too flimsy and has to grow relitively
fast!
hope someone can lead me into the right direction
TIA

Tank Top Question by
joe
I'm putting together a 75 gallon freshwater planted tank setup with an
Oceanic tank. I bought the tank and custom cabinet at an auction, but
there is no cover glass on the tank itself. I put in my own lighting
setup in the tank cabinet, and was wondering what was the best thing to
cover the water...

Reverse Osmosis System by
Keith
All,
I am currently intrested in purchasing a reverse osmosis system so
that I can crate "soft" water for my plants and rainforest fish. I
don't know if this is wise or not as I live in a one bedroom
apartment. Does anyone have any advice about this subject?
Thanks,
Keith

how long do fishtanks last? by
LeighMo
I ask because I the seals on my 29 gallon planted tank seem to peeling at the
edges. I bought the tank new in 1989, and it has been up and running
continuously since. There are many algae-eating critters in the tank
(bristlenose pleco, various species of snails, an oto or three, etc.), and...

Lighting for planted goldfish aquarium by
David L. Burkhead
To revisit this, (and cross it over to rafp, which I didn't even know
existed when I started) recommendations for lighting (based on what
particular plants require in the aquarium) are generally given in "watts per
gallon" Well, I did some research on how much light is produced per watt...

Best Lighting System by
Larry B
I have a 46 gallon Oceanic bowfront freshwater community tank
populated with a few real plants and am considering the purchase of
replacement lamps or a new lighting system.
I currently have a 36" Coralife fixture with one T5 10,000K, 21 watt
lamp and one Actinic Bluelight, 21 watt lamp.
I would...

am I fertilizing too little for 4wpg? by
Dave M. Picklyk
Nearly half a year ago I upgraded to 4 wpg (yah I know, holy crap am I
nuts?) I noticed an increase of algae proliferation. Mostly it (green hard
algae) starts to collect on the glass on the front (Probably because now I
have one of the bulbs closer to the front). My anubias MUST hide under...

newbie lighting questions by
gdbjohnson
I'm a novice at the planted aquarium. I have a 30gal tank that has one
Hagen Aqua-Glow lamp, which is an 18", 15W, K18,000 bulb.
I've done some reading that suggest 1-2 Watts/Gallon for a successful
planted aquarium, which means I need 1-2 more 15W lamps, give or take.
Firstly: Is the lamp I...

Shop Lights by
Bill Stock
Silly question.
How long are the shop light fixtures? I know they're all slightly different,
based on the brand. But, given that the bulbs are 48", the fixture must be
at least 49"? I'll be using the HD lights most likely. (I know, go buy one)
I want to build a canopy to match my stand, so I'm...

Blue-green algae / cyanobacteria? Or is it something else? by
Shorty
I think I have blue-green algae in my tank (cyanobacteria). The problem
is that it's not green at all. It's brown in color. It seems to behave
like blue-green algae because it's usually in the spots with little
water movement, on the gravel and hanging on anacharis/elodea and
surrounding my...

Plants not doing nearly as well as they used to by
François Arsenault
Hello everyone,
During the first year of my 40-gallon planted aquarium, my plants looked
great. In particular, I had a huge, beautiful Echinodorus. My other plants
were also thriving. In fact, at times I could actually see streams of tiny
bubbles coming out of them. I assume it was oxygen, which I...

CO2 system - opinions by
Cammie
What do you think of this system? Would it be okay for a 10 or 20 gallon
tank? It's so cheap I'm tempted to try it. I don't have a technical
"planted" tank, but a handful of Cabomba and Spiral Val and they are doing
so poorly even though I use Flourish. So what do you think of this system
for...
